Do not boast that you are better than those branches.  but if you do boast- you do not sustain the root, but the root sustains you. (Rom. 11:18)
The backstory of Romans 11 is the relationship between Israel who rejected Christ as the Messiah and the Gentiles (us) who were given the gospel as a result of Israel's rejection.
They are the branches. Christ is the root. We are those branches grafted in; in other words, given the gospel. Pride is a terrible thing. Whether it is ancient hatred between Jews and Gentiles or modern-day animosity between 21st century Christians and "all the rest" of the culture. We are not better. Nor are we loved more. Christ surely does sustain us.
